Las Cruces

City in southern New Mexico, USA, on the Rio Grande, north of the Mexican border; population (2000) 74,300. It is the seat of Dona Ana County, and is a processing centre for the area's crops, such as pecans, cotton, and vegetables. White Sands Missile Range, an important testing site for NASA, is nearby.

The name, meaning ‘the crosses’, commemorates a massacre of 40 travellers by Apache Indians in 1840.
