Las Piedras

City in Canelones department, southern Uruguay; population (1996) 58,288. Las Piedras is situated in a wine-growing district 22 km/13 mi north of Montevideo. It is the fourth-largest city in the country, and is noted for its ostrich farming and its racetrack. Economic activities include wine production, fruit-growing, and cattle-raising.
