Latacunga

Capital of Cotopaxi province, in the Andean sierra of north-central Ecuador, 80 km/50 mi south of Quito on the Quito-Guayaquil railway and the Pan-American Highway; population (1996) 40,000. Latacunga is a commercial centre for the region, and is served by an airport. The agriculture of the area centres on dairy products, cereal crops, potatoes, and vegetables. Many buildings are constructed from grey volcanic rock; Latacunga has been affected on several occasions by eruptions of Cotopaxi, which lies only 29 km/18 mi to the north.

There is a major annual fiesta on 23-24 September known as the Fiesta de la Mama Negra.
