Lateran Treaties

Series of agreements that marked the reconciliation of the Italian state with the papacy in 1929. They were hailed as a propaganda victory for the fascist regime. The treaties involved recognition of the sovereignty of the Vatican City State, the payment of an indemnity for papal possessions lost during unification in 1870, and agreement on the role of the Catholic Church within the Italian state in the form of a concordat between Pope Pius XI and the dictator Mussolini.
