Latilla, Gaetano (1711–1788)

Italian composer. A chorister at Bari Cathedral, he studied with Prota and Feo at the Conservatorio di Sant'Onofrio in Naples, where his first opera was produced in 1732. Appointed assistant maestro di cappella at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome in 1738, he returned to Naples in 1741 for health reasons. He was later choirmaster at the Conservatorio della Pietà in Venice (1756) and assistant maestro di cappella at St Mark's Cathedral in Venice (1762). He retired to Naples in 1772.

Works

c. 50 operas, for example Li marite a forza (1732), Gismondo (1737), Madame Ciana, Romolo (1739), Siroe (1740), etc.; oratorio Omnipotenza e misericordia divina; church music; instrumental music.
