Latina

Capital of Latina province in Lazio region, west-central Italy, 55 km/34 mi southeast of Rome; population (2001) 107,900. Products include pharmaceuticals, electrical goods, textiles, building materials, and foodstuffs (pasta and sugar); there is engineering industry. It is an agricultural market centre, and there is a nuclear power station nearby. Latina was founded in 1932, when work began on reclaiming the Pontine Marshes.

After World War II Latina received aid from the Mezzogiorno Fund, prompting extensive industrialization.
