Latrobe

Town in southwestern Pennsylvania, on the Loyalhanna Creek in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, 53 km/33 mi southeast of Pittsburgh; population (1990) 9,300. Situated amid rich farmland, it has light manufacturing, producing tools, plastics, and ceramics, and is the home of Rolling Rock beer.

In 1946 Latrobe was recognized by the National Football League as the birthplace of professional football, in honour of a game played here on 3 September 1885. It is the seat of St Vincent College (1846).
