Latrobe Valley

Area in the Gippsland area of Victoria, Australia, 150 km/93 mi southeast of Melbourne. The area includes the Yallourn mine, and the chief towns are Morwell, Moe, and Traralgon. The area has extensive deposits of brown coal, sometimes called lignite, which is mined using open-cast methods. Coalmines in the area supply power stations which contribute 85% of Victoria's electrical power. Tourism is also important.

The area includes national parks and the ski resorts of Baw Baw and Mount St Gwinear. At Moe ‘Old Gippsland’ is a recreated township which captures life in Early Gippsland (La Trobe Valley).

Until the introduction of natural gas, all of Victoria's gas was produced from the coal mined in La Trobe Valley.
