Lattre de Tassigny, Jean de

Lattre de Tassigny, Jean de (1889-1952)

French general. He served in World War I, and in World War II commanded the 14th Division during the German invasion 1940. He was imprisoned by the Germans after the armistice but escaped to the UK 1943 and joined General de Gaulle's Free French forces. He was the French signatory to the German surrender in Berlin 9 May 1945. Following the war he commanded NATO Land Forces Europe 1948 and was commander-in-chief Indo-China (now Vietnam) 1950-52.
