Laughton, Charles (1899–1962)English actor who became a US citizen in 1950. Initially a classical stage actor, he joined the Old Vic in 1933. He was known for his versatility, with roles such as the king in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933; Academy Award), Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), and Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939). In 1955 he directed Night of the Hunter.
