Laurance, John

Laurance, John (1750–1810)

English-born US politician. He served as judge advocate general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and presided over the trial of Major John André. He was a member of the Continental Congress (1785–87). As a Federalist from New York, he served in the US House of Representatives (1789–93) and in the US Senate (1796–1800). Laurance was born in Cornwall, England, and emigrated to North America in 1767, where he became a lawyer.
