Lauren, Ralph (1939– )

US fashion designer. He has produced menswear under the Polo label from 1968, women's wear from 1971, children's wear, and home furnishings from 1983. He also designed costumes for the films The Great Gatsby (1973) and Annie Hall (1977). Many of his designs are based on uniforms and traditional British sporting and country clothing. He was born and grew up in a working-class neighbourhood in the Bronx, New York. He studied at the City College of New York then served in the US army 1962–64. He worked as a salesman for the men's clothing chain Brooks Brothers, and began his own Polo label with neckties.
