Lauterbrunnen

Commune and resort in the Swiss canton of Bern, 10 km/6 mi southeast of Interlaken, in the Bernese Alps at the foot of the Jungfrau peak; population (1995 est) 3,000. The Altech Glacier, which measures 22 km/14 mi in length and is the largest in the Alps, is situated nearby. Tourism and lacemaking are important industries.

Lauterbrunnen is situated in a picturesque valley of the same name, and has numerous waterfalls, such as the Staubbach (height 300 m/984 ft). A cog railway connects the commune with Grindelwald, over the Keline Scheidegg pass, and a funicular electric railway (1912) ascends to Murren.
