Lavisse, Ernest (1842–1922)

French historian who wrote numerous books on German history and was general editor of three major series of histories.

The series for which Lavisse was responsible were: Histoire generale du IVe siècle à nos jours/General History from the 4th Century to the Present Day (12 vols.), 1892–1901; Histoire de France depuis les origines jusqu'à la Révolution/History of France from its Origins to the Revolution (9 vols.), 1903–11; and Histoire de la France contemporaine depuis la Revolution jusqu'à la paix de 1919/History of Modern France from the Revolution to the Peace of Versailles (10 vols.), 1921–22.
