Roman lawLegal system of ancient Rome that is now the basis of civil law, one of the main European legal systems. It began under the republic, was developed under the empire, and continued in use in the Byzantine Empire until 1453. The first codification was that of the 12 Tables (450 BC), of which only fragments survive. Roman law assumed its final form in the codification of Justinian AD 528-34. An outstanding feature of Roman law was its system of international law (jus gentium), applied in disputes between Romans and foreigners or provincials, or between provincials of different states.
