Lawrence, George Alfred (1827–1876)

English novelist. His novel Guy Livingstone: or Thorough 1857 is said to have originated the ‘muscular blackguard’ type of hero.

Lawrence was born in Braxted, Essex, and educated at Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford. He went to the USA to fight in the Civil War, but was taken prisoner and sent home.
