Lawrie, Lee

Lawrie, Lee (O) (1877–1963)

German-born US sculptor. He is known for his numerous architectural sculptures, such as his bronze Atlas (c. 1939) at the International Building in Radio City, New York. Lawrie was born in Rixdorf, Germany, and emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, with his family as a young child. He became an assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1894. He graduated from Yale University in 1910, and later taught at the same institution (1908–18).
