Seven years ago, CSPI petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to require the egg industry to clean up the farms where layer hens are raised. These costs were highest in the initial phase of the layer hen control program in 1997 but have been reduced considerably since then. Because molting (loss of feathers) increases egg production, farmers "force" molting by starving their layer hens. |
