Le Bel, Joseph Achille

Le Bel, Joseph Achille (1847–1930)

French chemist who is best known for his explanation of the asymmetric carbon atom in optically active compounds. He published an account in 1874, almost simultaneously with an identical discovery by the Dutch chemist Jacobus van't Hoff.

Le Bel was born at Pechelbron, Bas-Rhin, and educated at the Ecole Polytechnique and the Sorbonne.
