Le Gallienne, Richard (1866–1947)

English poet and essayist. He was prominent among the writers of the 1890s. His romantic novel The Quest of the Golden Girl 1896 won critical and popular favour. Other works include George Meredith: Some Characteristics 1902, The Romantic Nineties 1925, The Magic Seas 1930, and From a Paris Garret 1936.

Le Gallienne was born in Liverpool. He became literary critic for the Star 1891, and subsequently a publisher's reader. He was a founder member of the group of poets known as the Rhymers' Club, along with W B Yeats, Oscar Wilde, and others. In 1898 he visited the USA on a lecture tour and later moved to New York and then France.
