Le MansIndustrial city and administrative centre of the Sarthe département in western France; population (1999) 146,100, conurbation 194,800. It has a motor-racing circuit where the annual endurance 24-hour race (established 1923) for sports cars and their prototypes is held at the Sarthe circuit. It is linked to Paris by a high-speed rail system.

| American Le Mans Series: Valencia's Bryan Herta will race with Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti in the American Le Mans Series season opener, the 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida on March 17. R, the Z06's racing counterpart, once again frustrated the Euro establishment in winning the GTl class of France's extreme 24-hour Le Mans endurance race--Corvette's fifth win in the last six years. There was almost an inevitability about it given the dominance in both qualifying and the race and the amount of resource that had been made available for the program, but that should not detract from what has to be termed a "historic" win for the diesel-powered Audi at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race this year. |
