Le Mars

City and administrative headquarters of Plymouth County, northwestern Iowa, on the Floyd River, 40 km/25 mi northeast of Sioux City; population (2000) 9,200. It is a trading and shipping centre for a dairy and farming region. There is also meatpacking and dairy production.

The city was founded in the 1870s along the new railway to Sioux City. Le Mars took over as Plymouth County seat from Melbourne in 1872. The first courthouse was used 1874–1900. It was replaced by the present structure in 1901. Westmar College (1900) is here.

The town was named in 1869 while it was being laid out. The initials of the women in a party inspecting the area were put together, and the town came close to being called MeLars.
