Le Puy

Town and administrative capital of the Haute-Loire département in the Auvergne region of southeast France, southeast of Clermont-Ferrand; population (1999 est) 20,500. It is situated in a volcanic basin, and has a 12th-century cathedral containing the original manuscript of the Theodolph Bible. Industries include communication and information technology, electronics, mechanics, packaging, plastics and rubber production, and textiles.

Le Puy has a tradition of lacemaking, and a workshop for the preservation and production of fine lace. The town is the starting point for an ancient Christian pilgrimage to the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela.

The town is dominated by two hills of volcanic origin: the Rocher Corneille, 133 m/436 ft high, topped by a 16 m/53 ft-high gilded statue of Notre-Dame-de-France made from canons captured during the Crimean War; and the second, 85 m/279 ft high, topped by the church of St-Michel d'Aiguilhe (962).

He told us that the army was disbanded, and that he should return by Chateauroux, Clermont-Ferrand, Le Puy, and Nimes; and, if I had any money, he prayed me to leave it for him at Nimes, with an inn-keeper with whom I had dealings.
