US racing cyclist who, in 1986, became the first American to win the Tour de France.

Although his career received a setback in 1987 when he was shot in a hunting accident and nearly died, he recovered sufficiently to regain his Tour de France title in 1989 by just eight seconds. He won it again in 1990. He also won the World Professional Road Race in 1983 and 1989.
