Leacock, Ricky

Leacock, Ricky (1921- )

US documentary film-maker. He was among the pioneers in using portable equipment and the cinéma vérité style. He founded the film department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among his best known films is Monterey Pop (1968). Leacock was born in the Canary Islands, Spain, to British parents. He began making films at age 14, then moved to the USA at age 17. After serving as a combat cameraman with the US Army in World War II, he worked with Robert Flaherty, among other important US documentary film-makers.
