Leadville

City and administrative headquarters of Lake County, Colorado, in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains, near the headwaters of the Arkansas River, 121 km/75 mi southwest of Denver; population (2000) 2,800. It was one of the principal centres of 19th-century US mining, and has produced vast quantities of gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, bismuth, manganese, and molybdenum.

Among the sites that attract contemporary tourists are the Matchless Mine, Tabor Opera House (1879), and Healy House (1878). The Timberline campus of Colorado Mountain College (1965) is here.

At 3,108 m/10,190 ft above sea level, Leadville is reputed to be the highest incorporated place in the USA.
