Leamington Spa

Town and former health resort in Warwickshire, England, adjoining Warwick, on the River Leam, southeast of Birmingham; population (2001) 45,100. Public administration and services, distribution, tourism, and leisure industries provide the main employment. Manufacturing is more significant than the national average and includes engineering and automotive industries, producing brakes, steering, transmission, and other components. The Royal Pump Room offers spa treatment.

With mineral springs (saline, chalybeate) first recorded in 1586, Leamington developed as a spa in the late 18th century, and it became a royal spa after Queen Victoria visited the town in 1838. Leamington has extensive parks, gardens, and spacious avenues with Regency-style terraces.

The University of Warwick is located nearby.
