lean production

Combination of techniques, including just-in-time and TQM, used to help companies attain low-cost status. Lean production systems involve three main points: redesigning each process step so that it is part of a continuous flow; setting up multi-functional teams; and continually striving for improvement in terms of quality and cost reduction.

The origin of the concept of lean production is strongly associated with the company Toyota, the Toyota production system, and Taichi Ohno, who is widely acknowledged as the architect of the concept.
