Lear, Evelyn (1926– )

US soprano. She studied at the Juilliard School, New York and in Berlin, making her debut there as the Composer in 1958. She created Klebe's Alkmene in Berlin in 1961, and in 1962 sang the first of many performances of Berg's Lulu, a role she performed at Sadlerouths Wells, London in 1966 and recorded under Böhm. In 1967 she created Lavinia in Levy's Mourning Becomes Elektra on her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, and sang there until 1985 in operas by Mozart, Puccini, Strauss, and Verdi, often with her husband Thomas Stewart, whom she married in 1955. She sang the Marschallin at the Metropolitan Opera House in October 1985 and in Bernstein's On the Town in London in 1992.
