Leavenworth

City and administrative headquarters of Leavenworth County, northeast Kansas, USA, on the Missouri River, 32 km/20 mi northwest of Kansas City; population (2000) 35,400. Industries include paper products, candles, computer software, and foundry products. There is a commercial shipyard in the city. It has also become a centre for outdoor pursuits. Leavenworth was one of the chief river ports and fitting-out centres in the 19th-century colonization of the USA, via the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. It is home to St Mary College (1923).

Fort Leavenworth is nearby.
