Leboeuf, Edmond

    0.06 sec.

Leboeuf, Edmond (1809-1888)

French soldier, minister of war and marshal of France 1869-70. Before the Franco-Prussian War he claimed France to be in perfect readiness, and took much of the blame when the French army proved unable to resist the Prussian onslaught. He resigned, and fought bravely at Noisseville and Gravelotte, but was taken prisoner at the battle of Metz.

Leboeuf joined the army in 1832, and after serving in Algeria was made colonel. He directed the French siege operations around Sevastopol in the Crimean War. He also fought at the battle of Solferino (1859), when the French joined forces with Sardinia-Piedmont against the Austrians.
