Lebowa

Former black homeland assigned to the North Sotho people in former northern Transvaal Province, South Africa, now in Northern Transvaal. It consisted of five separate areas of territory. It achieved self-governing status in 1972.

A study conducted in Lebowa by the Department of Health, Welfare and Pensions (Sinclair, Mphahlele, Duvenhage, Nichols, Whitehorn & Kustner, 1982:753) to determine the mode of transmission of cholera found that consumption of open river water was positively associated with an increased risk of contracting the disease, and that cholera outbreaks were associated with rainfall pattern and temperature.
The bulk of the newspaper reports discuss witch-burnings in the Northern Transvaal (Gauteng Province) and the former homelands of Venda and Lebowa.
The self-governing territories were KwaZulu, KaNgwane, Gazankulu, Lebowa, KwaNdebele, and Qwaqwa.
