LebowaFormer black homeland assigned to the North Sotho people in former northern Transvaal Province, South Africa, now in Northern Transvaal. It consisted of five separate areas of territory. Of those homeland entities, Transkei, Qwa-Qwa and Lebowa were the poorest reserves of cheap labour during apartheid, with poverty rates respectively of 92, 88 and 83 per cent. An example is the University of the North in Lebowa which is an internationalist modernist complex clothed in a mosaic patterning reflecting a paternalistic 'white' reading of 'African' decoration'. It was noteworthy, the Committee said, that since Proclamation 38 of 1986 had been issued by the regime, giving additional powers to the "homelands' authorities, there had been an increase in violence in the "homelands', particularly in Bophuthatswana and Lebowa. |
