Lecompton

City in northeastern Kansas, between Lawrence and Topeka; population (1990) 600. Primarily a residential suburb, it has some agriculture-related commerce.

History

It was the capital of the Kansas Territory from 1855 to 1858. The proslavery Lecompton Constitution, written here in 1857, was defeated by the electorate in 1858.
