Lee, Arthur Hamilton, 1st Viscount Lee of Fareham (1868-1947)

English soldier and politician. He is chiefly remembered for giving his Elizabethan mansion, Chequers to the nation in 1921 as a country residence for prime ministers.

Lee was educated at Cheltenham and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He sat as Conservative MP for Fareham, Hampshire 1900-18, and served successively as civil lord of the Admiralty, 1903-05, director general of food production, 1917-18, minister of agriculture and fisheries, 1919-21, and first lord of the Admiralty, 1921-22. He was made a viscount in 1922.
