Leech, John (1817–1864)

An illustration from A Christmas Carol, by English novelist Charles Dickens, in a hand-coloured engraving by English engraver John Leech. In this, Scrooge receives his third visitor, the ghost of Christmas past, who reminds him of happier times. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843.

English caricaturist. He illustrated many books, including Dickens's novel A Christmas Carol, and during 1841–64 contributed about 3,000 humorous drawings and political cartoons to Punch magazine. His work provides a valuable record of Victorian social life.
