Legnano

Town in Lombardy region, northern Italy, 20 km/12 mi northwest of Milan; population (1993 est) 50,500. There are metallurgical and cotton industries. The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I (‘Barbarossa’) was defeated here by the Lombards in 1176.
