Leh

Chief town of Ladakh region, Jammu and Kashmir, India, situated east of the River Indus, 240 km/150 mi east of Srinagar; population (2001) 27,500. It developed as a trading post and market, but tourism is now important. Leh is the nearest supply base to the Indian army outpost on the Siachen Glacier.
