Lehigh County

County in east-central Pennsylvania, bordered to the northeast by the Lehigh River; area 901 sq km/348 sq mi; population (1990) 291,100. Its capital is Allentown. The county is part of a highly industrial region that developed in the 19th century due to its proximity to vast anthracite deposits. The decline of coal mining has brought economic hardship and high unemployment to the area.

Allentown's manufacturing base in textiles, transportation, heavy machinery, and other industries has also deteriorated.
