Lehmann, Karl

Lehmann, Karl (1894–1960)

German-born US classical archaeologist. From 1938 he directed the expedition to excavate the ancient Greek sanctuary at Samothrace. In 1954 he directed the building of a museum there. He wrote the definitive work on Trajan's Column (1926), a book on ancient ports, and several books on Samothrace, including Samothrace: a Guide to the Excavations and the Museum (1960). Lehmann was born in Rostock, Germany. He received his PhD from the University of Berlin, then taught in Berlin and Heidelberg. During World War I he was an interpreter for the Turkish navy. In 1935 he began teaching at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. He became a US citizen in 1944.
