Leiferkus, Sergei (1946– )

Russian baritone. He studied in Leningrad and joined the Kirov Opera 1977, as Andrei in War and Peace. He appeared at the Wexford Festival 1982–86, in Massenet's Grisélidis and Le Jongleur de Notre Dame, Hans Heiling, and Königskinder. From 1985 he sang at Scottish Opera, as Don Giovanni and Onegin, and from 1987 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, as Eugene Onegin and Tomsky (with the Kirov), Count Luna, Prince Igor, and Ruprecht in The Fiery Angel (1992). His US debut concert debut was in 1987, in Shostakovich's thirteenth symphony with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and his opera debut as Telramund at San Francisco in 1990. He appeared at Glyndebourne in 1989, as Mandryka, and at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, as Iago in 1994.
