Leigh, Walter

Leigh, Walter (1905–1942)

English composer. He studied at Cambridge and with Paul Hindemith in Berlin, Germany. In 1932 a work of his was performed at the International Society for Contemporary Music festival in Vienna, Austria. He enlisted during World War II and was killed in action.

comic operas The Pride of the Regiment (1932), Jolly Roger (1933); pantomime Aladdin (1931); revues Nine Sharp and Little Revue (1939); incidental music to Aristophanes' Frogs, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Orchestral

overture Agincourt, Music for String Orchestra, Three Pieces for Amateur Orchestra; concertino for harpsichord and strings.

Chamber

three movements for string quartet (1929), trio for flute, oboe, and piano, sonatina for viola and piano.
