Leisler, Jacob (1640–1691)

German-born colonial administrator in America. Taking advantage of the political instability caused by England's Glorious Revolution of 1688, he took command of New York in the name of William and Mary. Deposed in 1691 by troops dispatched from England, Leisler was tried and hanged for treason.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Leisler arrived in New Amsterdam (New York from 1664) as a mercenary for the Dutch West India Company 1660, becoming a successful merchant when the colony passed to English rule.
