In the Christian church, any written, authorized version of a service for public worship, especially the Roman Catholic Mass.

Its development over the centuries has had a direct impact on music and composition, because until the Renaissance the church had a near monopoly in the West on skilled musicians and composers, whose work therefore catered to the service.
