Lelewel, Joachim

    0.02 sec.

Lelewel, Joachim (1786–1861)

Polish republican activist and historian. He played a leading role in the Polish uprising of 1830 against Russian rule; after the revolt was suppressed, he went to live in France and Belgium. Lelewel is regarded as the founder of modern Polish historiography, and wrote many works on medieval and modern Polish history between 1829 and 1853.

Lelewel was born in Warsaw. He was appointed a history lecturer and later professor at the University of Vilna in 1815, but was dismissed in 1824 for his revolutionary sympathies.
