Symphonic legend by Jean Sibelius, Op. 22, one of four on subjects from the Kalevala, composed 1893–95 and first performed in Helsinki, Finland, on 13 April 1896. The other three are The Swan of Tuonela, Lemminkainen and the Maidens of Saari, and Lemminkainen in Tuonela.
