Lennep, Jacob van

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Lennep, Jacob van (1802–1868)

Dutch poet and novelist. His emulation of Walter Scott at a time when the historical novel was very popular gained him a reputation which he has not subsequently maintained. His romantic novel Ferdinand Huyck 1840 is, however, still a children's classic.

Born in Amsterdam, he took his doctorate in law at the university of Leiden 1824 and started legal practice in Amsterdam 1829, becoming procurator general. He was a member of the Dutch parliament 1853–56.
