Leno, Jay (James Douglas Muir) (1950– )

US comedian and influential talk-show host. After making a number of TV appearances, he began hosting his own show in 1992, taking over for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. He is known for his personable demeanor, work ethic, and prominent chin.

He began his career as a stand-up comic in nightclubs and appeared in a handful of films, such as American Hot Wax (1978). He appeared several times on the talk show Late Night with David Letterman and served as permanent guest host for the Tonight Show before inheriting the show. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno won an Emmy Award in 1995. He published his career memoir Leading with My Chin in 1998.
