Lenya, Lotte

Lenya, Lotte (1898–1981)

Austrian actor and singer. She was married five times, twice to the composer Kurt Weill, first in 1926, with whom she emigrated to the USA in 1935. She appeared in several of the Brecht–Weill operas, notably Die Dreigroschenoper/The Threepenny Opera (1928). Her plain looks and untrained singing voice brought added realism to her stage roles.
