Leo IV, St (died 855)

Pope AD 847–55, successor to Sergius II. Before his election he was a Benedictine monk of San Martino. During his pontificate, he built the Leonine Wall to enclose the Vatican, and organized forces that won a great naval victory over the Saracens off the port of Ostia in 849. He was godfather to the future Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, when he was confirmed in Rome in 853.
