Leo (V) the Armenian (died 820)

Byzantine emperor, 813–20. A general under Michael I, he deposed the emperor after his defeat by the Bulgarians at Adrianople. Leo defeated the Bulgarians near Constantinople, and signed a favourable peace. In 815 he revived iconoclasm, but met with strong opposition; the practice continued until it was outlawed in 843. He was assassinated by the friends of Michael the Stammerer, who succeeded him as Emperor Michael II (820–29).
